Sirocco Festival: 18th -20th April 2008
Wendy
Buonaventura and Karine Butchart present a festival of Middle
Eastern and Mediterranean dance and culture -
Sirocco is a wind which comes up from the Sahara, bringing
its warmth to Europe and our new festival celebrates this meeting of
cultures, with dance that has journeyed from East to West to find a
welcome here. We gather together some of the most inspiring
international artists and a huge range of dance styles, from
Egyptian raqs sharqi to American Tribal… and all styles in
between.

Wendy's latest book,
I Put A Spell On You looks at dancing women
from Salome to Madonna. Themes from this book are explored in her
current project, a dance film sponsored by the Arts Council of
England,
And God Created Devil-Woman.
Her 1983 book Serpent of the
Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World has become a classic and
is still in print. x
